entry 7

What is the writer trying to find out more about through their research (what research question guides their work)? Writers are trying to find the truth in their research so that they may provide the most accurate findings. They find the truth in their research by asking these questions. “What defines revision in a professional context? What approach is taken by those who make their living revising—that is, professional editors? Are their resemblances between their strategies? How is their revision process influenced by the mandate they receive, their conception of revision, and their experience?” (Bisaillon, 2007). Researchers use more a oral methodology of finding there facts. So unlike students they spend more time listening than reading.

Bitzer does not mean rhetorical audience, rhetorical speaker, rhetorical occasion, rhetorical speech, or rhetorical subject. He wants to know what discourse the speaker or audience is taking in a rhetorical situation. A exigence is when something is imperfect and marked with urgency. It is a obstacle or anything that is incomplete. For example a exigence could be anything for not naming something to not specifying on a particular action, such as “the boy ran” well who is the boy? Where did he run? How old is the boy? Any of these questions makes the statement a exigence.

Journal Entry #5

When it comes to english studies there is a ongoing debate of what english studies actually are. Some believe that english studies is solely one subject while others believe it is a multitude of disciplines. Scholars such as Benedict Anderson view english studies as a set of independent disciplines linked as a community of independents. While other scholars such as Kenethe Burke view english studies as a all inclusive discipline. One says that each subject of English is one discipline in it of itself, while others decide they are all together in a single study.

Journal Entry #3

1. I believe he means that that the student must prove to the university that they are able to be part of the university by showing that they have the aptitude in their writing to speak as a professor. If a student is able to speak like a professor and is able to in a way invent the aura of the university in their writing they are able to show the university they will be a benefit to the university not a hindrance.
2. He is saying that the students should write like they are a valued asset to the university and that they are capable of giving productive input the university as if they were part of the staff of instructors. The student should be able to win over the university's admissions staff by making them think they don't only qualify as a student, but that they belong as part of the university.
3. He states that the first paper is not as eloquent as the second paper. Also the he states that the second paper is much more creative and conscious of the writing at hand.
