Working Title: Patriotism: The growth and fall of American Nationalism

Submitted By: Sean Mooti

Research Question: Does American Nationalism affect a nations government?

Introduction

I will be researching the growth and fall of American nationalism throughout the years and finding chronological ties between the national sentiment and the efficiency of government. I am interested in better understanding how government reacts to it’s citizens and whether or not it does conform around it’s citizens or does it’s citizens conform around it. When I think of the USA I have always been proud of the country and it’s government since I was little. I may not agree with decisions that my government makes however I do support them as much as I can. I do believe that we are living in the greatest nation in the world, and I want to understand exactly why it is. I believe that doing this research topic will allow me to open my eyes to another side of the coin so to speak. In that I am what some would call a blind follower, which is absolutely false I am a educated supporter, of our nation and I would like to see how my fellow Americans do feel towards their government.

Research Method
In my research I will research surveys from the past ten years on citizens support of the government from the different polls such as Gallup and Rasmussen, and compare them to the political policies and issues of the time. Also I will interview fellow students in order to gain understanding as to how my peers feel towards the current administration and the previous one. I will then use this information along with research that has already been done in this area to try and find trends that I can then write about. Now the peers I will interview will be chosen from amongst my classes, acquaintances, and if necessary random students from around campus. I will ask them open ended questions about the current administration, past administration, their feelings toward government, and exactly how efficient they believe our government is. I will attempt to make the setting to be more of a casual conversation than an interview and the questions will not be asked in any order or even at the same time. In doing this I believe I can minimize the amount of data collection error. I feel that doing a sit down interview will possibly skew results, because the person will feel they have to answer concisely and immediately while in a conversation setting I feel they will be more open and then also in asking the questions at different times gives them time to think about the topic so that if they realized something that they didn’t say at the time or that they felt they were wrong bout they could comeback and mention it to me before being given another question to think about. Now after all my data is collected and I have compared to other research I will then begin researching the Rasmussen and Gallup polls and their chronological ties in governmental policies. I believe that I will be able to acquire the proper research and be able to enlighten not only myself but the class with how exactly there peers feel towards government.

Research Question: Is American nationalism, patriotism, still apart of citizen’s lives?

Introduction

There is many

Research Method
[Explain how you believe you can go about doing your research to answer your question. What kind of sources do you anticipate using (or have already identified)? What primary research could be done by you to supplement the secondary research written by other people? What types of texts do you envision looking at? What types of theories, concepts, or features might you focus on within these texts?]

Rhetoric and Composition – How would a researcher decide exactly which resources they would use in their paper and which of their resources would be left out?

English Education – The importance of educational television (Discovery channel, Military channel, History channel, ect…) as an alternative accompaniment to education.

Cultural Studies – The effect of American music on the cultures of the world.

Discourse Analysis – How would a student be able to differentiate a reliable source from a pseudo intellectual one.

5 Topics I Could Research and Write On
1. Why are “heroes/heroines” important to societies morale?
2. Telemarketing, is it really an inconvenience?
3. Truth behind the words, what is really being said when a politician speaks?
4. True meaning of “recession” in the context of today’s economy.
5. The power of the pope, where does his influence cease to exist?

The writer, Katrina Powell, asks the question “I ask in what ways do writers represent their selves as they situate themselves within an activity system?”. She wants to know exactly how writers in different educational systems ,whether it be secular or religious, express and represent themselves. The writer “It draws on material from a yearlong study of students, teachers, and administrators, all participants within a larger activity system.”. In other words she collects material from all students, teachers, and administrators within different types of learning institutions. I see my peers using many different forms of self-representation. All are trying to stand out from the crowd. Some use very extravagant writing styles trying to depict themselves as being of a more intellectual type, others use more of a poetic genre of self-representation which depicts a more artful and creative self-representation, while others are more concise and write to the point showing an idea of ones self that extrudes efficiency and precision.

What is rock? what is it’s true meaning? There are so many genres when it comes to rock and so many art forms in each. It comes to the point that you just can’t like rock anymore people will either like acid or punk heavy metal or grunge. Do to rocks variety there is that remaing question what is rock?
He uses rock magazines and music periodicals to find his answers. These aren’t always the best choice of evidence, because they usually write what sells even if it is not a actually sentiment towards rock. If a album is being fluffed to be something amazing and when it is released it is only good then the people complain and call it bad.
Some people make statements with their body trying to get noticed with piercings, tattoos, and clothing. Others use their minds excelling in certain fields making a name for themselves. And yet others show themselves through their character. It does not matter what your identity is as long as your authentic, however there are those that believe they are authentic when in actuality they are not. They portray a characteristic that is not theirs these people are called losers, because they lost their true identity and whether they ever find it again is up to them.

What is the writer trying to find out more about through their research (what research question guides their work)? Writers are trying to find the truth in their research so that they may provide the most accurate findings. They find the truth in their research by asking these questions. “What defines revision in a professional context? What approach is taken by those who make their living revising—that is, professional editors? Are their resemblances between their strategies? How is their revision process influenced by the mandate they receive, their conception of revision, and their experience?” (Bisaillon, 2007). Researchers use more a oral methodology of finding there facts. So unlike students they spend more time listening than reading.

Bitzer does not mean rhetorical audience, rhetorical speaker, rhetorical occasion, rhetorical speech, or rhetorical subject. He wants to know what discourse the speaker or audience is taking in a rhetorical situation. A exigence is when something is imperfect and marked with urgency. It is a obstacle or anything that is incomplete. For example a exigence could be anything for not naming something to not specifying on a particular action, such as “the boy ran” well who is the boy? Where did he run? How old is the boy? Any of these questions makes the statement a exigence.

When it comes to english studies there is a ongoing debate of what english studies actually are. Some believe that english studies is solely one subject while others believe it is a multitude of disciplines. Scholars such as Benedict Anderson view english studies as a set of independent disciplines linked as a community of independents. While other scholars such as Kenethe Burke view english studies as a all inclusive discipline. One says that each subject of English is one discipline in it of itself, while others decide they are all together in a single study.

1. I believe he means that that the student must prove to the university that they are able to be part of the university by showing that they have the aptitude in their writing to speak as a professor. If a student is able to speak like a professor and is able to in a way invent the aura of the university in their writing they are able to show the university they will be a benefit to the university not a hindrance.
2. He is saying that the students should write like they are a valued asset to the university and that they are capable of giving productive input the university as if they were part of the staff of instructors. The student should be able to win over the university's admissions staff by making them think they don't only qualify as a student, but that they belong as part of the university.
3. He states that the first paper is not as eloquent as the second paper. Also the he states that the second paper is much more creative and conscious of the writing at hand.

Claim - The government is ignoring global warming.

Data - The earth is warming, but the government is putting of talks on the enviroment.

Warrant - Global Warming is bad for the earth.

Grounds - Global Warming changes the climate of different regions making it uninhabitable for different species.

Backing - The loss of certain species can disrupt the natural order of the world possibly affecting human life as we know it.

Qualifier - The government is not ignoring the issue they are just caring for more pressing issues at the time.

Conditions of rebuttal - The earth goes through cycles continually warming and cooling. Using Ireland as a microcosm of the world it is to cold to farm there when in the past it was a great farmland. Lightning storms releases ozone which will heal the ozone layer covering earth.
